Variety Is The
Spice Of Life
"Not only is a varied diet essential to provide optimum nutrition, it
also increases the enjoyment your dog gets from his/her food. Would you
enjoy eating the same thing every day for the rest of your life?
Does your pet?"
The
goal of natural feeding is to maintain optimum body weight. Take a look at your dog -
is he/she overweight? Under weight? Is he/she gaining or
losing weight? The answers to these questions should guide your
feeding requirements. (Your dog should have a light covering of
flesh over the ribs.) The general rule of feeding is 1/2 lb. of
food per day for ever 25 lbs. of body weight. For puppies, the
rule is 1 lb. for every 10 lbs. of body weight. You know your dog
best!
You have decided
to feed your animal companion the way Mother Nature intended. Good for
you, and even better for your Furry Friend! Here are some tips for
helping your dog make the switch. The easiest way is just to give Rover
the food and he eats it. Unfortunately, not all dogs switch that
easily. Some dogs, (like us), can become very addicted to the sugar and
salt found in canned dog food, kibble and treats. So your little buddy
may get fussy - have patience. You may have to put the same bowl of
food out for your dog 3-4 or more times. Leave the bowl out for approx.
10 minutes. Don’t fret, a dog can go up to a week without food, but the
longest I’ve seen a dog go without eating is 2 days.
So now your dog is
eating raw, but he may not eat it at every meal. Great, this means your
dog is full - probably for the first time in his life! This is an easy
problem to fix. Cut back on the amount of food offered. You’ll start
to notice that the natural raw diet is more filling than kibble.
Perhaps your dog is not eating the bones (or burying them) and waiting
for you to give him the mush meal (or vice versa). Again, not only is
your dog full, but he is also training you to feed him his favorite
dish. Don’t give in! The more variety in Rover’s diet, the better off
he will be in the future.
You may notice
some changes in your best friend. This is natural process called
detoxification. This process may last anywhere from a few days, up
to a month. It usually consists of things such as loose bowel movements,
runny eyes, bad breath, ear discharge, and/or pimples. You probably
won’t notice any of these events, but if you do, they should pass
quickly. This process is just cleaning your little buddy’s system out.
These events, although unpleasant, are not as bad as they sound. For
instance, loose bowel movements dose not mean uncontrollable diarrhea.
In fact, after a few days you should notice a lot less stool, and what
stool there is will be hard & whitish in color. This too is normal.
Make sure he has lots of water during this time, but you’ll probably
notice his consumption of water will go significantly down. This is
natural because he is now getting most of the moisture he needs from his
food.
